Downcliffe House Hotel in Shock Closure
Rumours have been rife for some considerable time, but the news that the Downcliffe House Hotel is to close on 2 April has still come as a shock to many in Filey and beyond. The boutique hotel is set to be converted into private apartments.
Although the Downcliffe has been for sale for several years, its closure during a time when visitor numbers are booming in Filey has caught the majority by surprise. The Downcliffe was proud of its reputation as a boutique hotel and its restaurant was highly regarded.
The downfall of the Downcliffe leaves The White Lodge as the sole high-class hotel and restaurant in the town. There are apparently plans to open a boutique hotel and restaurant on Rutland Street, but at the time of writing there is no firm news on an opening date. At a time when many businesses are investing in the town, the closure of the Downcliffe feels like a retrograde step. It’s a real shame, as Filey needs to continue grow its upmarket attractions.

Very saddened to learn of the closure of this delightful hotel. I was hoping to visit this weekend. I hope someone will take it on and maintain the high standards
Such a pity , had some fantastic times in the Downcliffe. Such a fab place. Always loved to see the Buddha’s, if you want to sell them let me know , it would be a lovely reminder of our times there.

Absolutely gutted to hear the news. only spent one long w/e at the downcliffe but it was one of the finest hotels we have stayed in anywhere! a sad loss of quality accomodation on the yorkshire coast!!
I am gutted to hear this. we had a booking for a second visit, but it was cancelled at the start of lockdown. I haven’t been able to get in since. This explains it. What a loss for filey!
