The Kipperman is coming to Filey Distillery as part of May’s Filey Literature Festival. Over the weekend of 13/14 May fishing historian Mike Smylie will smoke kippers on his mobile kipper house.

It is the first time kippers have been smoked on the site for a century. Mike will be giving a talk at 2pm on Sunday 14 May and will be selling kippers. There will also be an exhibition of the herring industry within the distillery building.

The talk is a free event and there will be a pop-up bar operated by the site’s current occupiers, Filey Distillery. The story appeared in the Yorkshire Post this week.

With the season just over the horizon, several festivals are beginning to announce their line-ups and 2023 looks like being a bumper year for the town.

A harbinger of summer has to be the signing on day at Southdene Bowling Club, pop along to the green (behind the Sea Cadets Building) on Wednesday 15 March between 2pm and 4pm to join or find out about the club. The greens themselves open on Saturday 1 April (weather permitting).

The food festival with a sea view returns on the weekend of Saturday-Sunday 8-9 April. Filey Folk Festival is hard on its coat tails, with the town pulsating to the sound of live acts from Friday 28 April until Monday 1 May.

Filey Literature Festival promises everything from Knickers to Kippers on Friday 12 May to Sunday 14 May. We can’t wait to bring you their line up, those that have leaked out thus far are amazing!

The merry month of May ends with a Sailing Regatta and the Steampunk Weekend on the same dates: Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 May.

Quite a start to the new season! We will bring you more dates later.

The fishtive tree on Coble Landing

The inspiration for the tree came from Ullapool in Scotland. A Filey resident saw Ullapool’s creel tree and proposed the idea to Filey’s Tourism and Trade Association. Local fisherman were asked whether they could supply the pots and the tree made its first appearance on the Coble Landing in 2017. The name fishtive tree came from one of the pupils of Filey Junior School when they were designing a poster for the event.

The tree will remain lit during the hours of darkness until early January. Visitors are invited to make donations, which, along with generous sponsorship, will help ensure that the tree will return next year. Any surplus funds will be donated to projects involving young people in the town. You can read more about the wonderful work the monies raised has enabled at the Fishtive Tree’s Facebook page.

After covid cancellations, the Filey Lions Bonfire is finally back and back with a bang!

Thankfully this year 5th November falls on a Saturday, so gather all at 6pm on the West Avenue car park for a free bonfire courtesy of the Filey Lions. The lovely Lions will be there with their caravan, so bob along to say hello and make a donation towards the Lions who direct all their efforts and monies to good causes locally.

Filey Lions Bonfire

As ever, it is expected to be a very busy event, so please consider walking to the bonfire if at all possible. Parking will be severely restricted and obviously the West Avenue car park will be closed to facilitate the bonfire itself.

What a weekend that was! The cars of the Trackrod Rally rumbled around the town and the Filey Bay 1779 Festival took place. We had parades of cars, parades of Sea Cadets and crowds galore at both events.

The Royal Navy Parade held in connection with the Filey Bay 1779 Festival

The Trackrod Rally took place over the entire weekend, with a parade and ceremonial departure towards the challenging roads of Dalby Forest. The commemoration of the Battle of Flamborough Head also covered the weekend, with the annual dinner held at a packed Sea Cadets building on Southdene and a parade on the Sunday.

Both events will be back next year over the weekend of 22-24 September 2023.
