Storm Arwen Hammers Filey
It has been a wild couple of days as Storm Arwen brought near 100mph winds in off the North Sea. The promenade was battered by heavy seas. Several trees were uprooted, roofs damaged and at the allotments a number of greenhouses were wrecked. The train service was suspended until mid-afternoon on Saturday and one unlucky motorist on West Avenue found her car crushed beneath a tree. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident.
By Sunday the worst was over and Filey awoke to a covering of snow. Further up the coast, a concert by The Jam at Scarborough Spa had to be cancelled due to waves overtopping the sea defences. At Whitby around one hundred homes were flooded by a storm surge and the mast on the replica of Captain Cook’s Endeavour was snapped by the gale. In County Durham a caravan park had to be evacuated after vans were turned over and ripped apart by the storm.
